Romelu Lukaku: The World Class Striker.

Heading into this season, there were many that considered Inter Milan to be a favorite to bring home the league title this season. There are many reasons as to why people had Inter Milan down as the favorites this season but arguably the biggest reason is their main man up front Romelu Lukaku and so far, this season, he has been excellent.

This season alone, Lukaku has propelled himself from being an elite striker to being one of the most lethal strikers in the world. Inter currently sit second in the table, only 2 points behind their rival AC Milan and a huge reason as to why the title race is still so close is because of Romelu Lukaku’s contribution.

In all games this season Lukaku has 18 goals and 3 assists across 25 games this season. Including twelve goals in the league, good enough for third in the goal scoring charts in Italy. Despite being third, he has notched those twelve goals with only 47 shots, 7 less than second place Immobile (with 13 goals) and 24 shots less than first place Ronaldo (with 15 goals) so you can see that he is very lethal in front of goal and can convert with limited chances. That’s not all, if we were to look deeper, expected goals suggest that he should be at the top of the Serie A scoring charts with an expected goal return of 12.56.

It should also be noted that those twelve league goals he has scored has translated to lukaku singlehandedly winning 8 points for his club, more than Ronaldo who only has 6. Without him, Inter would be in 7th spot far away from challenging for the title. Further proof of him becoming one of the best players in the world is the fact that Lukaku has scored 5 decisive goals in the league and 2 decisive goals in the champions league showing that he does rise to the occasion like all elite forwards do. Most recently, he was able to score the equalizer in a Coppa Italia game against rivals AC Milan in a game they went on to win

The 12 league goals he has so far has him in 7th place for the Golden Shoe race. He finds himself behind the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe and above the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Bruno Fernandes. Very elite company.

In terms of his own career, his goals to minute ratio is by far and away the best he has ever had with him currently averaging a goal every 107 minutes. A ratio that does also have him among Europe’s elite. His underlying stats also show him having a brilliant career, his shots per 90 currently sit at 3.2 , the second highest of his career. Lukaku also shows signs of expanding his game from being just a goal scorer. He is currently completing a career high 2 dribbles per 90 , 25 passes per 90 and 15 passes in the final third per 90.

As this season continues to go on, Lukaku will be leading the charge for Inter Milan to beat out everybody else and win the Serie A as well as the Coppa Italia and continue to establish himself as one of the best forwards in the game.
