Premier league Power Rankings! - October

 10) Dominic Calvert-Lewin – Last month’s top performer in our power ranking comes in at 10th in our October edition. Calvert-Lewin has continued his fine goalscoring form at the start of this season and has maintained his spot atop the Premier League goalscoring charts. His only blank performance came in the surprise 2-0 loss to Southampton in game week 6. However, the striker is still averaging a goal every 76 minutes of league action with 8 goals in 7 matches (3 in 4 during the month of October).

9) Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa appeared to strike gold with summer signing Ollie Watkins after he starred in their jaw dropping 7-2 victory over the defending champions with his hattrick and further assist to Jack Grealish. However, his performances dipped in the next two fixtures where the young English striker missed two big chances for his team before bouncing back with a late penalty goal vs Southampton. These performances were enough to bag him the 9th spot on our second power rankings for the season.

8) Ben Chilwell – After a torrid start at the back by the Londoners, the signing of Edouard Mendy has seemingly brought a lot confidence to their backline. During October they kept 3 clean sheets in their 4 matches. The one game they conceded in saw Kepa’s return to the starting line up with Mendy nursing an injury. Chilwell has been a model of consistency for the blues on the left side of their defence, whether it be in a back 4 or 5 over this period. The young English Left back has managed to chip in with 1 goal and 2 assists during the month of October.

7) James Ward-Prowse – the Southampton captain has always been a consistent performer in a box to box midfield role but has shone in the last 2 game weeks with 3 goals and 1 assist as the Saints emerged with somewhat surprising victories against in form Everton and Aston Villa sides. His quality from set pieces were on full display against Villa as he scored two spectacular freekicks from just outside the box and delivered a gorgeous out swinging delivery which was met by big centre back Janik Vestergaard.

6) James Rodriguez – Despite his injury problems at the end of the month which saw him miss the final fixture of October, James was spectacular throughout. His resurgence under Carlo Ancelotti warrants his inclusion in our power rankings for this month. Although he may consider himself quite unlucky to just miss out in the September edition, it was impossible to leave him off the list for this month where he managed 2 goals and two assists in just 3 games. After watching Everton without him against Southampton, his impact on the side is hard to overlook. What has been most surprising from the Colombian has been his willingness to help out in defence since his move to Merseyside.

5) Mohammed Salah – The Egyptian winger just keeps on scoring. He has shown no sign of easing up and currently leads the league in goal attempts. Surprisingly however, his shots per game and key chances created are down this season in comparison to previous campaigns, but you wouldn’t bet against him just popping up with one. His involvement in the overall build up has increased in a Liverpool team tasked with adjusting to change and finding ways to incorporate Diogo Jota into the starting line-up.

4) Callum Wilson – The former Bournemouth striker did the business for Newcastle at the beginning and end of the month, managing to score 2 goals in both their victories over the last four game weeks while also adding an assist vs Burnley. The poacher has given a real boost to a Newcastle side that struggled with both chance creation and conversion last season having bagged in all of their positive results so far this season. From the looks of things, all of his goal contribution will be vital to the Magpies success this season.

3) Jack Grealish – Aston Villa’s maverick skippes had an October to remember with 3 goals and 4 assists. In a much-improved Aston Villa side, Grealish remains the central cog in all of their attacking impetus. With better players around him to both feed off and assist, his full capabilities are on full display, leaving one to wonder just how good he could’ve been in one of the “top 6” sides if any of his rumoured transfer destinations met the Villains asking price in the summer. To complete his attacking displays, the often left-winger puts in a shift defensively for his side.

2) Hueng-Min Son – Tied for top spot on the Premier League’s goalscoring charts, the high-flying Korean left winger comes in at no. 2 on CFT’s power rankings for the month of October. After stellar outings in the first 3 fixtures this month where he managed to bag at least one goal in each game, he had a rather uneventful outing in game week 7 vs Brighton & Hove Albian. What is most interesting about Son’s form so far this season is that his 8 goals have come from a total of 15 shots, showing an elite shot conversion rate. His partnership upfront with Harry Kane has been extremely fruitful for the North London outfit as Kane to Son has been the most common assister to goal scorer combination in the first two months of the season. We at CFT hope Son’s amazing form continues into the following months.

1) Harry Kane – After managing to add 5 goals and 3 assists to his tally for the season. Tottenham’s no. 10 has formed a formidable partnership with Son upfront with Jose Mourinho’s counterattacking style making the most of Kane’s ability to make defence splitting passes from a withdrawn striker role and Son’s ability to make runs from deep and calmly finish past on-rushing goalkeepers. At this point the passing between the pair seems to be somewhat telepathic as they both just seem to know where the other will be. His league leading 8 assists to complete his 6 goals so far this season means the striker currently has the most goal involvements through the first 7 weeks of the season. With 2 goals and 1 assist outings either side of the international break, the Englishman was able to back up his form by managing to add a crucial assist and goal over the next two matches which directly led to both victory for Spurs.
