TTFA vs FIFA: A David vs Goliath Final

FIFA has ordered a Normalisation Committee (NC) to run the daily affairs of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA). It was a massive story that has been broadcasted around the world, putting Trinidad and Tobago on the map, some may argue for all the wrong reasons.

HOW DID THIS KICK OFF?

The new TTFA President, William Wallace, had come forward to reveal to FIFA that there were poor financial management methods that were implemented by the former TTFA administration. This had resulted in FIFA invoking their protocols, which involved the creation of a Normalisation Committee headed by Mr Robert Hadad.  The TTFA interpreted this as a foul tactic. The purpose of the NC is to run the daily affairs of the TTFA and to ensure that the association repays the debt, ensures understanding and compliance with FIFA regulations and establishes a new Executive Committee. The failure to abide by these steps could result in the insolvency of the TTFA, as well as a ban.

DID THE TTFA CHALLENGE THIS?

This decision was first challenged by the TTFA on home soil. The ruling by Justice Carol Gobin, on July 29th, ruled that FIFA’s decision to remove Mr Wallace and put the NC in, was not legitimate. This was a major victory for the twin-island Republic. In April, the TTFA made an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). FIFA requires the CAS to make this ruling since it is accordance with the FIFA Statutes.

This July ruling by Justice Gobin was asked to be ignored by FIFA and move the ruling to be resolved by the CAS. This message relayed to the NC. This was a statement from FIFA that the TTFA, run by Mr Wallace, should not be involved in the decision-making process. Their stance was that the NC was the liaison between the TTFA and FIFA.

WHAT IS THE SPECTATOR’S VIEW?

This caused persons outside of the country, but within the region and confederation to give their own opinions on the matter. Randy Harris, the head of the Caribbean Football Union, said that there was reason for the action against the TTFA. He did not state that he was on the side of FIFA but made it very clear to the TTFA that they could face sanctions by the football-governing body.

CURRENT STATUS?

Currently, Mr Wallace has blocked FIFA from speaking with the TTFA clubs. This meeting was set up by Mr Hadad, in which FIFA would explain the current situation to the clubs of the Association.

A case such as this could take quite a while to be resolved. The TTFA has won their home leg, and in order to meet the away goals, they must not turn this into a war against FIFA, but rather ensure that the CAS understands that the decisions made FIFA were too swiftly and without sufficient understanding.

WHAT IS THE END RESULT?

The potential sanctions have huge implications for the country. It would be such a shame, especially since the 2026 World Cup is in the Confederation and an expanded version would give Trinidad and Tobago a great chance to qualify for that spectacle.  However, there is still time remaining.
