CORNER FLAG TALK’S PL POWER RANKINGS-SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER

CORNER FLAG TALK’S PL POWER RANKINGS-SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER -BY COURTNAY TURPIN

10) Georginio Wijnaldum – the Dutch international may be a surprise pick for this power ranking but his industrious play combined with the guile he provides in the middle of the park has been key to Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the season. It is also important to note that he has kept expensive summer recruits, Naby Keita and Fabinho, out the side thus far.

9) Mesut Ozil - Arsenal have played some of the silkiest football we’ve seen this season over the past two months with Ozil being central to most of these plays. With Arsenal being unbeaten over this period, their star man and stand-in captain has chipped in with 3 goals and 1 assist so far and has shown a side of his game that some Ozil and Arsenal fans have been begging for.

8) Virgil Van Dijk – Liverpool have kept 3 clean sheets and conceded only 3 goals over this two-month period. As we eluded to in our last power ranking, the Dutchman has been involved in more clean sheets than any other player in the EPL since his Liverpool debut. He has been world-class no matter who he has played alongside in the centre of Liverpool’s defence and has been important in both boxes on set-pieces despite not scoring yet for the season.

7) David Silva – hard to choose between the “Silva brothers” in City’s midfield but David just beats Bernardo for an inclusion in our power ranking due to his controlling nature in the middle of the park. City’s stand-in captain along with his midfield counterparts have made the loss of Kevin De Bruyne unnoticeable thus far. Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten Manchester City are clear cut creating chances at will undoubtedly due to their creativity in midfield and wealth of talent around the park.

6) Ross Barkley - The young Englishman has finally found his feet at Stamford Bridge notching 3 goals and 3 assists in October alone. This has coincided with a return to the international squad making the midfielder a deserved member of our Top 10 Power Rankings.

5) Anthony Martial – No one has scored more important goals in October than the Frenchman has for Manchester United. The Frenchman has saved the struggling giants of the Premier League with his fine form notching 4 goals and 1 assist in a month that has seen United win two games when trailing in the first half and a draw against the unbeaten Chelsea.

4) Callum Wilson – in our previous power ranking we had hoped Wilson could carry on his early season form and he has obliged. Notching 4 goals and 3 assists for the Cherries since August. He is beginning to stake a claim for an inclusion in the England squad with his willingness to run the channels and unselfishness at times.

3) Gylfi Sigurdsson – the Icelandic international is finally proving his worth for Everton, scoring 5 goals in 6 games with his standout performance coming against Fulham where he missed a penalty but managed to keep his head down and work hard for the rest of the game scoring two before the final whistle. In the number 10 position behind Richarlison, Sigurdsson has also created a lot of goal scoring opportunities for his teammates.

2) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – The striker has been lethal in front of goal despite not starting games, contributing with 6 goals and 1 assist over this period. He currently has the best conversion rate in the Premier League and has been in the right place at the right time to finish Arsenal’s silky football at the end of games.

1)  Eden Hazard – Although both Callum Wilson and Aubameyang have been involved in more goals than the Belgian, his overall play has undoubtedly been the best in the league thus far. The fear factor he brings is underrated and defenders are terrified of him running towards them with the ball at his feet with his low centre of gravity and immense close control. With 5 goals and 1 assist despite missing one game through injury over the September-October period, it is hard to deny Hazard’s claim to our top spot.
